The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is a federal law enforcement agency responsible for protecting our communities from:

The special agents of the ATF are called upon to investigate crimes related to above areas, which includes performing undercover and surveillance work, interviewing suspects and witnesses, searching for physical evidence, and making arrests.
Because of the nature of the work within the ATF and the law enforcement capabilities of the special agents who make up this federal law enforcement agency, candidates who want to pursue jobs as ATF agents must be able to meet the strict employment requirements set forth by the Agency.
Meeting the Degree Requirements to Become an ATF Agent
Similar to other federal law enforcement positions, ATF agents must be able to meet the education and/or experience requirements at the GL-5 level, the minimum pay level at which ATF agents are hired.
- GL-5: To qualify at the GL-5 level, individuals must have at least three years of experience, with at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-4 level. Specialized experience includes criminal investigation or law enforcement experience that involved the application of laws related to criminal violations.
However, individuals without prior experience may qualify for ATF special agent jobs if they possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Although the ATF does not demand any specific college degree, individuals with interest in pursuing special agent careers generally choose to complete a college degree program in a related field, such as:

- Psychology
- Political science
Depending on the needs of the ATF, the Bureau may require individuals to meet the requirements at the GL-7 or GL-9 level, which require applicants (without prior experience) to possess the following education:
- GL-7: Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in (or a closely related program):
- Criminal justice
- Sociology
- Psychology
- Political science
In addition, the applicant must possess either a 2.95 GPA or higher in all undergraduate courses or those completed in the last two years of study or a 3.45 GPA or higher in all courses related to the major course of study or within the last two years of undergraduate study. Applicants must also have ranked in the upper one-third of their college class and hold membership in a national honor society.
Individuals who cannot demonstrate superior academic achievement in their undergraduate college degree program may qualify through education if they possess at least one full year of graduate-level study or a master’s degree or higher in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, political science, or a directly related field.
- GL-9 level: Candidates must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent graduate degree) or at least two full years of higher-level graduate education leading to a degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, political science, or a directly related field.
